Late Thursday night, in Chicago’s, South Side, Cornell Square Park, 13 people were shot. Today, a 3-year-old boy fights to survive as he remains in critical condition. Officer Ron Gaines, of the Chicago Police Department said, “The 3-year-old victim was shot in the ear and the bullet exited through his mouth.” After surgery, several news sources says he’s in stable condition. As of early this morning, none of the other victims are listed in critical condition.
Gaines matter-of-factly reported, “The other victims included two 15-year-olds who were listed in stable condition.” The remainder was adults ages 21 to 41. Four were in serious condition, but their condition’s improved. The conditions of the others were listed as stable, or good. One adult was treated and released from the hospital.
The investigation suggests that the shooting is possibly gang-related. As of late Thursday night no suspects have been apprehended.
According to 2012 FBI statistics, and despite New York possessing a population that’s three times as large, Chicago, is the country’s murder capital. Last year, 500 homicides were recorded. That is a startling increase from the 431 that were documented the previous year.
