A bizarre story out of Des Moines, Iowa goes to show that crack addiction isn’t a Black, inner-city monopoly. Drug addiction spans across color lines and tax brackets, causing some to do outrageous things in pursuit of their next high. This is explained by the story of an unidentified, 19-year-old male in Des Moines. He was allegedly the victim of kidnapping at gunpoint by a crazed crack addict, who turns out to be a well-known business executive in the area. The teen says that he was kidnapped by 45-year-old Mark Allen Hanrahan, a top-level executive at the Principal Financial Group. There is no reason given yet why Hanrahan singled out the specifically teen for the kidnapping at gunpoint. His motive for kidnapping someone was evident according the teen. He was in search of crack cocaine. The teen waited outside of his girlfriend’s house in his car when Hanrahan appeared brandishing a gun and told him to get in his truck. According to the teen, Hanrahan threatened him with death if he couldn’t find drugs for him. The teen tried to plead with Hanrahan that he wasn’t into drugs and couldn’t help, Hanrahan told him that he would drive to Omaha to get some if need be. The teen faked phone calls like he was searching for the crack, but was really making calls for help. He spoke in Spanish so that his abductor wouldn’t be hip to what he was doing. After two hours, family was able to pinpoint where the teen was and police found him with Hanrahan.read more

In an interesting ruling, the Supreme Court of the United States has sided with Muslim prisoners who wish to grow their beards. The Court ruled 9-0 in favor of Gregory Holt, also known as Abdul Maalik Muhammad, a White Muslim, for his religious freedom claims against the Arkansas Department of Corrections. Holt wished to grow a beard in accordance with his Islamic faith, but the Department of Corrections forbade him from doing it, due to its policy that banned beards unless an inmate had been diagnosed with a dermatological disorder. The Supreme Court found that the Arkansas Department of Corrections’ policy “as applied to this case, violates the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) which prohibits a state or local government from taking any action that substantially burdens the religious exercise of an institutionalized person unless the government demonstrates that the action constitutes the least restrictive means of furthering a compelling government interest.” According to CNN: In 2010, Holt was convicted of first-degree battering and sentenced to life. Five years earlier he had pleaded guilty to threatening to kidnap and harm the daughters of President George W. Bush. In a handwritten petition, Holt asked that the Justices take up his case because the “no beard grooming” policy violated his rights to “practice Islam as he believes it is supposed to be practiced by wearing the beard.” He said he was a devoted Salafi Muslim. The original policy was put in place to deter inmates from smuggling and hiding contraband in their beards. This notion was struckread more

The “Ferguson”/”I Can’t Breathe”/#BlackLivesMatter movements took the streets yet again on Monday in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday under the banner of #ReclaimMLK. Nationwide, thousands marched in the fashion of those freedom fighting during the Civil Rights Movement to show solidarity against police brutality and excessive force in America. One group in California’s Bay Area protested in a local Walmart in the name of John Crawford by slapping warning stickers, with Crawford’s face on them, on toy guns being sold in the store. John Crawford was one of the many killed this summer by police. He was in a Walmart in Beavercreek, OH with his girlfriend one night. They separated from each other and Crawford was filmed walking around the Walmart with a toy gun. Police were alerted by a prank caller and two Beavercreek police officers ran into the store and shot Crawford dead on site as he was on his cell phone. The shooting cause a stampede in the Walmart and another woman was killed in the fracas. Both officers were cleared of any wrong doing. The warning stickers placed on the toy guns were yellow and white like regular warning labels, but they featured the widespread image of John Crawford with the words: “Persons of color picking up this object may be subject to serious injury or death at the hands of Walmart and police.” Activists in Beavercreek have met this protest with rousing approval and requested that more of the stickers be produced and dispersed throughout theread more
