Albuquerque Police Face Murder Charges In Homeless Man’s Death

The Ferguson and “I Can’t Breathe” movements have come to speak for a long history of police violence towards innocent people. In the cases of Mike Brown, Eric Garner, John Crawford and many others, the police officers who killed them will never be charged with a crime for the act. This common story is different in Albuquerque, NM for two police officers who killed a homeless man in March. This led to a series of less publicized, yet turbulent protests in response, months before the killings of Eric Garner in Staten Island and Mike Brown in Ferguson in the summer. As a result, former detective Keith Sandy and officer Dominique Perez are now facing murder charges. Sandy and Perez stand accused of murder for the death of 38-year-old James Boyd in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains in Albuquerque. In a video, Boyd appears to be surrendering when the officers fire a stun grenade at him. Boyd is seen holding two small knives in his hands when the smoke clears and the officers lit him up with their service weapons after yelling at him to get down. They then tell him to put his hands out to the sides and drop the knife, to which Boyd replied that he couldn’t move. Pertaining to the murder charges, lawyers for Sandy and Perez maintain their innocence, claiming that they did nothing wrong in the situation. According to BBC World News: A year-long US investigation found Albuquerque police had inappropriately killed suspects and used more force on thoseread more
