Just every other industry in the world, the drug industry must adjust with the times. With technology improving every day, drug dealers look for ways to use it to fly under the radar of law enforcement agencies looking to nail them. Ross W. Ulbricht, can be seen as an innovator in the drug game for his creation of the online black marketplace, Silk Road. Heroin, cocaine, LSD and pretty much every other drug that people get high on were available on Silk Road and were paid for with Bitcoins. However, the feds saw Silk Road as a major problem and Ulbricht was arrested and charged with seven counts related to his dealings. On Wednesday, a jury found him guilty on all charges. From January 2011 to October 2013, Ulbricht made $213 million off the Silk Road enterprise before being caught (Bitcoins can be traced). He was apprehended by FBI agents in a San Francisco library as he was logged into his laptop under the name “Dread Pirate Roberts,” the moniker he used to operate Silk Road. According to the government, Ulbricht made millions off of commissions through the sales on the site. In his closing arguments, federal prosecutor Serrin Turner said “[Silk Road] lowered the barriers to drug dealing by enabling drug dealers to reach customers online they could have never met on the street.” Prosecutors also showed evidence that Ulbricht paid hundreds of thousands in Bitcoins for murder contracts on several people he saw as viable threats, though the government has said no one was harmed. Prescription drugs are among the biggest drug epidemics to happen in recent years. Drug seekers all over seek out doctors willing to write them prescriptions for the powerful pills that they crave. The Bronx-based Astramed Physician clinics were a place were pill poppers could go for an easy prescription for intoxicating medications, mainly oxycodone, a strong pain medication. The feds caught wind of their operations and shut them down recently, resulting the arrests of 24 people including doctors and staff as well as drug dealers who sent “patients” to obtain prescriptions to get pills to put on the streets. Astramed operated as a veritable “oxycodone dispensary.” It is reported that between January 2011 and last month, doctors at the clinic’s Southern Boulevard and Westchester Avenue locations wrote 31,500 “unnecessary prescriptions.” This would be a total of 5.5 million tablets given out over the year’s span, valued at more than half a billion dollars ($550 million) on the street. The indictment states, “The clinic itself bears little resemblance to a standard medical office. Crowds of up to 100 people gathered outside [one of the clinics] clamoring to see one of the doctors and thereby get a prescription for oxycodone.” It also noted, “The majority of these individuals had no medical need for Oxycodone or any legitimate record documenting an ailment for which Oxycodone would be prescribed.” It is said that violence has also been tied to the operation including two shooting murders. Astramed’s ringleader, Dr. Kevin Lowe collected fees totaling $12 million for “visits” made by crew members during theirread more

Every driver in a location that has cold winters has had to let the car warm up before starting your trip to wherever you go. Sometimes, the car needs that time to perform to its best ability. However, in Kansas, this is against the law and law enforcement is starting to crack down on folks who warm their cars up. Police in Roeland Park, specifically, have been stroking $125 tickets on cars that are warming up. They are patrolling neighborhoods, looking for cars that are running to hit them with a violation. One officer reported that he wrote nine tickets and doled out four warnings. This measure is not seen as a way of punishing drivers. The ticketing of running cars is being marketed as a move by police to curb car thefts. In Johnson County, Kansas, there have been 38 cars stolen in the past month. Last winter, the county reported 60 vehicles stolen that were left running unattended. “Your car can be stolen in a matter of seconds. During my recent enforcement I did stop, go up to the vehicle and look inside the car or open the door and a lot of times the owner of the car never came outside to contact me and say hey what are you doing around my car? That’s plenty of time for somebody to steal your vehicle,” said Officer John DeMoss. The ticketing does not apply to cars with remote starts. Drivers are fine as long as there are no keys in the ignition. If thereread more
