Colombia is one of (if not the) premier cocaine manufacturer and distributor in the world. It’s been that way for years. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime found that the country produces around 300 tons of cocaine annually. Last year, it is reported that authorities confiscated some 166 tons in raids. However, one of the nation’s criminal outfits took quite a blow as police seized 3.3 tons of cocaine in an offensive against them. On Tuesday, police seized the cocaine in the jungle region of Colombia that borders Panama. The drugs are said to belong to the Usuga Clan of Colombia and is worth a reported $90 million. The shipment was believed to be intended for a Mexico destination. This follows a 3 ton seizure of cocaine last week in port terminal in popular tourist destination, Cartagena. That was also believed to be headed to Mexico. The Usuga Clan reportedly is 2,000 deep, making them the nation’s largest criminal organization. They traffic drugs heavily, but have also said to be involved in illegal mining. Authorities are offering $600,000 to anyone who can provide information on the gang’s leader. According to Canoe: Many crime gangs are comprised of ex-members of paramilitary groups who officially demobilized nearly a decade ago. Marxist rebels also reap hefty profits. Cocaine and other drugs are some of the principal sources of financing for groups fighting in the country’s 50-year armed conflict, which has killed over 200,000 people. The Chicago Police Department has long been known as one that executes corrupt practices. However, recently, the top was blown off of one of its darkest secrets. That secret is a facility called Homan Square, which can be likened to the CIA’s black sites. Suspects are brought in unbeknownst to family and attorneys. Homan Square has been in operation for about 40 years according to reports. It said to be “the scene of secretive work by special police units.” Reports indicate that Chicago police keep detainees out of official booking databases, administer beatings which cause head wounds, shackle suspects for extended periods and deny lawyers access to the facility. Suspects as young as 15 years old are held there between 12 and 24 hours. At least one man was found dead in one of the “interview rooms.” The facility reportedly holds several military-style vehicles, interrogation cells and a cage. Detainees there are most often poor Black and brown individuals. According to The Guardian: Unlike a precinct, no one taken to Homan Square is said to be booked. Witnesses, suspects or other Chicagoans who end up inside do not appear to have a public, searchable record entered into a database indicating where they are, as happens when someone is booked at a precinct. Lawyers and relatives insist there is no way of finding their whereabouts. Those lawyers who have attempted to gain access to Homan Square are most often turned away, even as their clients remain in custody inside. In a statement, the Chicago PD said: CPDread more
