Their high-flying maneuvers and prowess on the hardwood make them idols for many, young and old. The players in the NBA is probably a more diverse lot than any professional American sports league, featuring players of all types of backgrounds, but it’s clear to see that Black players are the majority. Seeing this, as well as the diversity initiatives put in place by the NBA, it would seem the NBA would do more to celebrate the Black men that are the lifeblood of the association. Designers and music artists, Jahmeke Rodriquez & Duane Rowe took it upon themselves to present the NBA with a way to celebrate its Black players and the community that spawned them. They are now petitioning for the NBA to incorporate a Black History Month set of jerseys for the players to wear during February. The designs are an Afrocentric reimagining of the current NBA jerseys with Kente prints on the trim and numbers. “The NBA Black History Month Jersey project is specifically geared towards uplifting our culture through educating our audience about some of the most influential figures, known and unknown, in African/African-American culture while at the same time displaying our design capabilities,” explained Rodriguez.”We feel that having the NBA athletes wear these jerseys would not only showcase African kente designs but educate people about the accomplishments of the honorary recipients on a much larger scale.” A Black History Monthread more

The death of Eric Garner was the one of the major contributing factors to the #ICantBreathe/#BlackLivesMatter movements. Garner was choked to death by an NYPD officer as other officers tackled him to the ground for selling loose cigarettes. It was hoped that the officers responsible for his death would be tried for using excessive force, but they were never charged. However, now, a Black NYPD officer is being indicted for excessive force in a separate case, though no one was killed. Officer Joel Edouard turned himself in at a Brooklyn precinct Tuesday morning and pleaded not guilty to the charges of excessive force. The charges stem from an incident last year when Edouard stomped on the head of a drug suspect during a stop. The incident was caught on cell phone camera. NYPD officers had the suspect handcuffed on the ground and stomped his head into the concrete causing lacerations to the face. Though Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson called the allegations “unacceptable for a police officer,” Edouard’s attorney says that his client was simply doing his job by handcuffing a drunk suspect who had marijuana in his possession. This instance of police brutality came less than a week after Eric Garner’s chokehold death. Considering the outcome of Garner’s case, is there any hope for the man claiming that he was wronged by the NYPD? Granted, Officer Edouard was actually indicted, but the same criminal justice system that saw nothing wrong with the choking death of Garner will be at play during this case. [NBC NEW YORK]

Researchers at the University of Minnesota and New York University conducted a study titled “The Internet’s Dirty Secret” that analyzed Craigslist transactions. In the study, data was analyzed from 33 states from the years 1999 to 2008. Researchers found that the thousands of responses to Craigslist personal ads account for a 15.9% increase in HIV infections after the site moves into a new U.S. market. The study found that 6,000 cases of HIV infections are linked to Craigslist every year. Furthermore, these transactions have generated $65.3 million in HIV related treatment costs annually. “I actually think that the creators of Craigslist had no intent of harming society,” said researcher Jason Chan. “They came in with good intentions.
