Phil Jackson may be heading back to the NBA very soon. The Zen Master recently met with the dismal New York Knicks and is thinking about accepting a position to join the teams front office. At this point, the Knicks are better with publicity than playing, and the new opportunity would reunite Phil Jackson with the Knicks — a team he won two championships with some 40 years ago.
Jackson is arguably one of the greatest coaches in NBA history, but he has never held a job in a NBA from front position before. Many Knicks and Laker fans are unsure if he can get the job done. While he ranks among the best when it comes to coaching he hasn’t proved anything in a front office. At 68, he will have to learn how to accomplish and do the job right away. The Zen Master may be considered the best coach of all time, but here are four reasons he can’t help the Knicks.
Contracts On The Books
With big men Amar’e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler both on the books until summer 2015, the Knicks cannot go out and sign any big names this summer because of their contracts. The team does have hopes of signing 2015 free agents Kevin Love, LaMarcus Aldridge, Rajon Rondo, Marc Gasol and Tony Parker. That sounds great however New York Knick fans want a turnaround right away not two seasons from now. They did the same thing when LeBron James became a free agent but the Knicks came up empty handed but they landed Stoudemire as second prize which hasn’t turned out well.
Phil Jackson’s Desire
New reports are saying if Phil does take the job he doesn’t want to be an “everyday in the office guy,” and he doesn’t want to do any scouting for the team. When taking a desk job for the NBA those are the daily function of any executive. This also could be a move by the Zen Master to get the Lakers to make a play and also have him hired as an executive for the L.A. team since he already lives on the west coat and his current girlfriend Jeanie Buss is also an executive for the Los Angeles Lakers. Which could cause some problems if Phil takes the Knicks job.
No Drafts Picks
When teams have bad seasons they can rebuild with draft picks, and the Knicks well they have no picks in the upcoming NBA draft and none in the next. They’ve traded away several upcoming second round picks, too. Which means the Knicks can’t rebuild with young talent and relying on the current roster to move forward will not help in rebuilding.
Will Carmelo Anthony Stay
The Knicks Are hoping with the hiring of Phil Jackson it may sway the NBA all-star to stay in New York, but with all his negative comments about the Knicks having no pride it maybe best for the Knicks to keep him on the current roster. Raymond Felton may not be a Knick next season because of his gun charge, and Tyson Chandler wants out of NY and STAT hasn’t shown he is productive enough. The Knicks will be doomed whether Melo resigns or not with Phil Jackson behind the desk.
