It seems the marriage has finally ended, Thibs is out of Chicago
After years of speculation and a season of sheer disbelief, the Chicago Bulls have announced in a press release that they will in fact part ways with coach Tom Thibodeau after 5 years. Thibs was informed of the decision today and knew this day would come. With $9 million left on his contract, if Thibs decides to take a coaching job (say the Pelicans, Magic or Nuggets) he”ll void the money he has coming from the Bulls.
According to Gar Forman, he had this to say about the termination of Coach Thibs:
“When Tom was hired in 2010, he was right for our team and system at that time, and over the last five years we have had some success with Tom as our head coach,” said Chicago Bulls General Manager Gar Forman. “But as we looked ahead and evaluated how we as a team and an organization could continue to grow and improve, we believed a change in approach was needed.”
According to K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune, Thibodeau’s last days were this week and it was only a matter of time till he was let go. After taking the job in 2010, he compiled a 255-139 record and made the playoffs all five years he was a coach, but never made it past the conference semifinals. We’ll have to see how this benefits the Bulls moving forward, but one thing is for sure, Gar Forman will be “heavily” involved.
