Weed effects everybody differently. Some folks can’t tolerate the high, but some find it the effects of marijuana to be euphoric, mellowing and therapeutic. It is common knowledge that Tetrahydrocannabinol (better known as THC) is the main active compound in marijuana. THC is a cannabinoid, but it is not the only cannabinoid in marijuana. In fact, there are a plethora of cannabinoids (104 to be exact) in marijuana that make strains act the way they do when ingested. Some of the more prominent examples are CBD and CBG. They bind to receptors in your body and do what they do, and relieve symptoms of various diseases. Recently, researchers discovered new naturally occurring cannabinoids in marijuana.

The research was done by marijuana scientists at the University of Mississippi. Ole Miss scientists have developed “research-grade cannabis finally up to par with that of dispensaries,” according to High TimesStudying the new buds, they found seven new cannabinoids. They are as follows:

8α-hydroxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol

8β-hydroxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol

10α-hydroxy-Δ8-tetrahydrocannabinol

10β-hydroxy-Δ8-tetrahydrocannabinol

10α-hydroxy-Δ9,11-hexahydrocannabinol

9β, 10β-epoxyhexahydrocannabinol

11-acetoxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid A

High Times reports:

Using a complex, multistage, multi-solvent extraction process, scientists started with nine kilograms of dried buds and isolated between 10 and 150 milligrams of these minute compounds. They tested them on mice, and found that a few of them got mice just as high as THC, while others had different effects.

The discovery of new cannabinoids gives us a better grasp on the cannabis plant as a whole, and a better opportunity to understand it as a whole.
