Juicy J drops his debut album on this date 13 years ago
Memphis rapper Juicy J saw a resurgence in his career thanks to his massive hit “Bandz A Make Her Dance” and his work with Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang. However, Juicy J has been making noise in hip-hop since his Oscar Award winning group, Three 6 Mafia, debuted in 1991.
After tasting success with Three 6 Madia, Juicy J dropped his solo debut, Chronicles of the Juiceman, on this day in 2002. The project, released on independent label North North Records, was filled with southern gangsta rap songs. Many of the tracks referenced then-group member Project Pat‘s four year prison bid which was a result of Pat violating his parole by having guns in his car.
Although not a hit on mainstream charts, Chronicles of the Juiceman hit number four on the Top Independent Albums chart. It was catapulted there by the single “Smoke Dat Weed” featuring Lord Infamous.
Once his debut solo effort ran its course, Juicy J returned to the Three 6 Mafia fold and delivered three more group projects before winning their Oscar for Best Original Song in 2006 for “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp”.
