To be a thief, you don’t have to do much. You have to be brash and ballsy, pretty much, you can’t give a fuck. Being a successful thief, however, takes a whole lot more. The successful thief needs an above average amount brains, patience and sophistication to pull off the jobs worth the big bucks. It takes a very specific person to successfully burglarize high end jewelry stores. At 10 PM tonight, “20/20” on ABC will be airing the story of four men who came up on millions of dollars by orchestrating heists of of more than twenty jewelry stores in about two years.

The crew was led by “The Risk Reducer” Michael Young, an ex-con with supposed ties to organized crime. He led Victor Lupis, Jack Cannon and “The Hero Stopper” Ernest Remor in the crime spree which spanned over eight states. They utilized various tactics, mainly preying on unsuspecting, older female store employees. According to Portland Police Det. Eric McDaniel, “They usually go after a female, and an older female if they can because they just believe that they’re just the most vulnerable person to steal from. Once they kind of built a relationship with an employee at the jewelry store, they would start looking for the higher-end diamonds.”

They also used force when necessary. According to ABC News:

During a theft at Lou Wilson Fine Jewelry in Vero Beach, Florida, Young had the team use a stun gun on owner Lou Wilson. Weeks earlier, the team took turns shooting each other with the stun gun to see what it felt like, Portland Police Sgt. Brian Hughes said.

“Mr. Young’s term for practicing with the Taser was to quote, ‘Become one with the Taser,’” Hughes said.

Like so many other crime stories, the crew’s downfall was greed and flash. Their social media posts boasting the extravagant things they were buying and doing led to their capture. Not to mention, someone in the crew snitched.

Tune into 20/20 tonight for the full story!
