After 46 years in solitary confinement, 71 year old San Quentin Six member Hugo “Yogi Bear” Pinell was killed in a prison riot near Folsom

Earlier this week, Hugo “Yogi” Pinell, the 71 year old accomplice of George Jackson, his brother Jonathan and the rest of the infamous “San Quentin Six”, was killed in a prison riot in Folsom.

Pinell was one of six people that were deliberately attacked during a riot of an estimated 70 inmates in California State Prison-Sacremento, located outside Folsom, according to corrections officials.

Yogi had been in state prison since 1965 for a rape in San francisco, for which he received life without the possibility of parole. In 1971, he was given another life sentence for killing a prison guard. On August 21st of the same year, Pinell was a part of a controversially historic prison break attempt from San Quentin State Prison, in which Black Guerrilla Family founder George Jackson and his younger brother Jonathan were killed. Many Black activists commemorate the event during what’s known as “Black August”.

CSP-Sacramento is located adjacent to the historic Folsom State Prison and is built to house inmates in high security, including solitary confinement. It houses about 2,300 prisoners.
