We get to witness the rise of one of history’s greatest and most notorious drug kingpins, Pablo Escobar, and his quarterbacking of the Columbian Medellin cocaine cartel thanks to the newly released series via Netflix. “Narcos” sheds light on Escobar’s prominence in drug culture and you’re able to watch everything unfold and draw references from some of your favorite rapper’s coke raps and braggadocios bars.

Narcos isn’t for the casual hip hop fan. If you’re into Pusha T’s cocaine colloquialisms or a Jeezy hot 16 about how he got it for 17. 5 then you’ll appreciate the series a little bit more, in my opinion. Scarface references may fly over the heads of this new generation of rap fans but shows like these are able to reignite street references and give battle rappers new punch lines and updated metaphors.

Narcos did a great job of laying the foundation for a better understanding of Escobar and the $25 billion fortune he amassed. $25 billion worth of money that reportedly needed about $2,500 a month in rubber bands to fold it up.

Check it out on Netflix to get a fix of your not-so-American history.
