Sound Culture Fest stands to fuse cultures by bringing two of the world’s biggest musicians to NYC

Labor Day marks one of the biggest celebratory weekends of the year for Americans that identify with (or embrace) Afro-Caribbean culture. Fittingly, this weekend stands to be packed with countless fetes, bashments, concerts and day parties surrounding Carnival – with a wide variety of options sure to cause paralysis by analysis, if you think too hard.

Among the huge concert events taking place in the Big Apple this weekend is Sound Culture Festival (September 5th, Irving Plaza). This first iteration of the festival series features two of the world’s largest musicians, representative of Caribbean and African sound. According to W&R Projects – the organization that collaborated with Live Nation and Big Moose Entertainment to make it all happen – the main objective is to unite both cultural communities in NYC, and promote authentic sound. This years headliners include the Nigerian-bred “koko master”, D’banj (formerly of Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music label), and the self-proclaimed “King of Soca”, Machel Montano (of The HD Family).

In addition to this stellar headlining duo, Oga’Silachi (w/ DJ Lady Lane), Sedale, and Wildfire will be gracing the stage in an opening capacity. Spinning for the evening is a coalition of talented DJ’s: Young Chow (of Hot 97), Tunez, El-G, The Busy Twist and Black Moses. And acting host/MC for the evening is British comedian and presenter, Eddie Kadi.

Tickets are on sale now, via Live Nation!
