The preseason hasn’t even begun, and injury-prone Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose needs surgery.

During the first practice of the year, Rose took an elbow to the face, which fractured his orbital bone.

Rose will undergo surgery Wednesday. A source told K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune that there is “optimism” Rose will be ready to play in the Oct. 27 regular-season opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

According to a CBS Chicago report, teammate Jimmy Butler said the injury happened midway through practice.

For Bulls fans, this is just another addition to a long list of injuries that Rose has suffered during his oft-promising career. Tim Reyonlds of the Associated Press tweeted a list of injuries Roses has suffered since entering the league, and it’s jaw-dropping.

Though this injury won’t end Rose’s season, it comes a day after Rose made some controversial comments about “preparing” for his free agency in 2017.

No official timetable has been set for Rose’s return to the court.
