It was all good when Boston police officer Brian Smigielski, 43, was leading an investigation the Academy Homes Street Gang that operated out of the Academy Homes housing development in Roxbury. Smigielski, an officer devoted to deterring youth violence and gangs, was poised to do his job and eradicate the gang’s activities. The Boston PD teamed up with the FBI to jointly investigate the gang from 2009 to 2011. However, when he was told to hand the case over to the FBI, Smigielski didn’t wasn’t happy about it. Instead of following orders and leaving it alone, he set out to sabotage the feds’ investigation by conspiring with the gang.

Smigielski, along with fellow cop Mel Steele, met with two members of the Academy Homes gang (one well-known for selling cocaine out of the housing development) for the first time in 2010 to inform the gangsters that the FBI was investigating them. This cooperation continued, as MassLive reports:

Later that year, the other Boston cop helped one of the two gang members identify an unmarked BPD car that was tailing his fellow gang member.

Then in 2011, one of the two gang members met with Smigielski, who told him that a recent car stop was likely meant to help law enforcement officials prepare for the gang member’s “imminent” arrest.

According to the Boston Globe, Steele pleaded guilty “to charges that he lied to FBI investigators about alerting the gang members that they were under investigation.” He was sentenced to a year of probation and fined $2,000. He has since resigned from the force.

Smigielski pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of “conspiracy to defraud the United States.” As part of a plea deal, he will serve one year of probation, granted the judge approves the deal when he is sentenced on January 28th.
