Q: What was your motivation behind making this movie?

A: I really wanted to make a movie that was just the stuff that I grew up watching. I wanted it to feel like a gory, R-rated version of the goonies. That was what I was going for and I love stuff like gremlins and monster squad and all these things I grew up watching. So that was the big inspiration for me. Also just to make zombie movies silly again. I think all of the zombie stuff out there right now is pretty serious so I thought it was nice to put some fun in it again.

Q: Was there a message you wanted to deliver with this production?

A: Yeah. For me the whole movie is really about friendship. It’s about these three guys who have to stick together and survive a crazy night, which happens while they’re at a crossroads in their friendship because a lot of stuff changes in peoples’ lives and you find yourself being pulled in different directions by different things. Especially when you’re in high school and you’ve got some guys who  just wanna go to parties and wanna get laid and then you’ve got another guy who just wants to be a kid so they don’t know how to be friends anymore. Over the course of this night I think they realize well shit it’s still important to be friends and put your friendship first

Q: Were you a scout growing up?

A: No I wasn’t a scout growing up. In a previous interview I remember someone asking me about that and I remember going to a scout meeting in my elementary school and I was kinda like “meh not for me”. But I respect it, I think that these kids learn a lot of important lessons and values in the organization. It’s funny because the Boy Scouts of America don’t want to be associated with this movie and I understand because we’re gory and we’ve got nudity but I think that we still represent their core values really well. I think we make scouting look really cool. I think they’re gonna get a little bump in membership because of us.

Q: In the movie, David Koechner’s character wouldn’t give up even after having nothing left but his head. Does his character represent anything meaningful?

A: For me, he was the opportunity…I always call them my Kenny from South Park. I  just love that this poor kid keeps getting killed over and over again and he’s just a fighter. But I also think it’s a reflection of who he is as a character. He’s the OG boy scout. You can’t keep him down, he just keeps coming back. I think that’s kinda his thing.

Q: There were moments in the movie where all three of the friends came close to being bitten but they were saved. Was that done just to keep them alive?

A: Yeah absolutely and to be able to play with a lot of the expectations. There’s that one scene where one of our characters gets attacked by an elderly zombie and we think that he’s done for until we realize she doesn’t have any teeth. That was a really fun scene to do.
