One year following the shooting death of Akai Gurley, the 28 year old father who was gunned down by NYPD in his building in the Louis H. Pink Houses in East New York, Brooklyn, his family has planned a march to mark the anniversary of his shooting.

Gurley, who was fatally shot in the chest by Officer Peter Liang in the staircase of his building when the officer allegedly fired his service weapon by accident. Gurley was unarmed.

The march marking Gurley’s death will begin in front of the Pink Houses where Gurley was shot, then will continue on to East New York’s 75th Precinct and followed by Police Service Area 2 where Liang and other NYPD are assigned to patrol the Pink Houses. The march is expected to begin at 6:30 PM, according to Gurley’s aunt, Hortencia Petersen.

Liang is currently facing charges of manslaughter and negligent homicide in relation to Gurley death. Two new attorneys have taken over Liang’s defense since he was originally charged for the shooting earlier this year.
