This week, the 31st Film Independent Spirit Awards Nominations were announced at the W Hollywood.
Congratulations are in order for Idris Elba and Abraham Attah, as their film Beasts of No Nation garnered five nominations. The film, which tells the story of a child soldier in a war torn African nation, marked Netflix’s first project to be released in theaters. It could be the streaming service’s first Oscar winner.
LBGTQ drama Carol is another film to watch, as it was nominated for six awards. Tangerine, directed by Sean Baker, was beautifully shot on an iPhone. The film received four nominations. Tangerine‘s stars Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor are currently in the midst of the first Oscar campaign for transgender actresses.
