Notes To Self is a Toronto Hip-Hop group that deserves your attention. They’re also a permutation of another Hip-Hop group, BBRC. After they released their album, Target Market [Recoil], through Decon, they stumbled upon some live concert audio clips. We’ll let them explain the rest:
“This just came in from Bronze of Notes to Self. It’s a recently surfaced concert tape and seems to be an alternate assembly of the group, Notes to Self, playing a live gig in LA with some special guests. When the group came up on the bootleg recording, they decided to press a limited run of 150 cassettes themselves. Here is a stream of the audio rip and the tape’s amazing fan art, which captures one of the live set’s recurring motifs—the universally traumatic experience of your blue jeans staining your white Air Force 1s.”
Besides sympathizing with them on their “stained Air Force 1 syndrome,” we heard a lot of creative freedom and lyrical elements that meshed to create something unique. The production draws heavily from older Rock and big band songs while the topics range from how fresh they can get in all senses of the word, arguing with your girl on a holiday, and mixing up your favorite drink in a Big Gulp cup. Basically, these guys take your everyday lives and add the soundtrack and rhythms they needed all along. Stream the mix below and check out their site HERE.
