In a Christmas event that was hosted by mobile phone company Unitel, American femcee phenom Nicki Minaj performs in the African nation of Angola despite criticisms from a human rights rights group that was against it from its inception.

The Human Rights Foundation(HRF), the organization that moved to have the concert cancelled, said in a letter that the money to pay her came from “government corruption and human rights violations”. The phone company that sponsored the show in the capital city of Luanda is co-owned by the family of Angola’s President Jose Eduardo dos Santos.

Thor Halvorssen of the Human Rights Foundation wrote in the letter to Minaj last week that her participation in a show sponsored by a government “involved in gross human rights violations would be improper”. Mr. Halvorssen points out that Unitel is controlled by daughter of the president and Africa’s richest woman, Isabel dos Santos.

Before going on stage on Saturday, Minaj posed with Angola’s flag on her Instagram along with a pic of her posing with Isabel dos Santos, stating, “She’s just the 8th richest woman in the world. (At least that’s what I was told by someone b4 we took this photo) Lol. Yikes!!!!! GIRL POWER!!!!! This motivates me soooooooooo much!!!!”
