KUJICHAGULIA!(Self Determination)

The second principle of Kwanzaa is arguably one of the most important elements for an individual and a collective body of people who strive to advance against adversity; self determination(KUJICHAGULIA). There have been movements and events that have proven that the struggle for civil and human rights continues in this country with those who are relentless in their pursuit of freedom, justice and equality. Here are just five examples of self determination that Black people have shown in the past year that must be carried into 2016.

After this young lady, who was a very strong advocate of the #BlackLivesMatter movement in Texas, lost her life while in police custody, people around the country of all races still recognize her story as a symbol unwavering bravery in the face of adversity. She was also a subject of discusion during the Democratic presidential debate which was spark by Bernie Sanders.

University Of Missouri Football Team Walk Out

Amid several occurrences of racism on the U. Of Missouri campus, about 30 players from the Midwest college’s football team protested in the form of a strike. The team would not play, practice or be involved in any school sponsored sports event as a team until the school’s president Tim Wolfe resigned for not addressing the school’s racial issues.

15 Year Old Zaevion Dobson Dies A Hero Shielding Friendss From Gunfire

Zaevion Dobson, a 15 year old high school football player, gave his life in order to save the lives of his friends by shielding two girls from gunfire that erupted in a senseless act of violence in Knoxville, Tennessee. Dobson was the only one hit by the bullets and died on the scene.

#BlackLivesMatter Movement

In the midst of every social injustice, police shooting, political gathering or protest that has affected Bkack people, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has relentlessly been present to peacefully, yet assertively demand justice for the lives lost and those affected by it for the past few years. Ever since the Trayvon Martun shooting in 2012, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has continued to grow and gain momentum.

Leader of the Nation Of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan spearheaded the second gathering of its kind in the past 20 years in the nation’s capital to address the mental, social and economic issues(just to name a few) that afflict Black and Brown people in this country. Dubbed as the “Justice Or Else” movement, the march that attracted millions of people to the Washington Mall to demand justice primarliy for the spike in police-related deaths in the past few years.
