The Indiana High School Athletic Association announced Monday that girls’ basketball teams at Ben Davis and Pike High Schools have had the rest of their seasons canceled following Saturday’s brawl which had the girls from both teams clear their benches.
The game will go down as a double forfeit, with both teams being barred from the state tournament and both teams will spend next season on probation. Coaches and all varsity and junior varsity players from Pike and Ben Davis at the game also must complete an online sportsmanship class.
IHSAA commissioner Bobby Cox called the fight “egregious” and “dangerous”.
It’s unclear if either school will take the case to court.
Last year, the IHSAA issued a similar ruling following a fight in northwestern Indiana between two boys’ teams. A court disposition blocked the penalty and one of the other schools in hte tournament, Griffith, won the Class 3A state title.
