On Tuesday, Oscar Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o joined the conversation about the lack of diversity in this year’s Academy Awards. Lupita’s comments come right after the week-long discussion and criticism from actors and actresses such as George Clooney, Jada Pinkett Smith, Spike Lee and others who were very vocal about the 20 acting categories have not had a single Black actor or actress nominated for an award for the past two years.

Ironically, Nyong’o was the last Black actor or actress to receive the award which she got for her supporting role in 12 Years A Slave. The Kenyan/Mexican actress stated in an Instagram post that she was “disappointed by the lack of inclusion in this year’s Academy Awards nominations.” In conclusion, she said, “I stand with my peers who are calling for change in expanding the stories that are told and recognition of the people who tell them.”
