It’s no surprise that Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a smashing success. The seventh film in the Star Wars franchise introduced some new characters, brought back some old ones, and set the platform for two films to come in the series. With Rian Johnson poised to take the reins from J.J. Abrams and directing the next Star Wars film, Episode VIII, Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow is already planning to go big for the final film of the trilogy.

In a panel at Sundance with Christopher Nolan, Trevorrow talked about favoring shooting the movie on film oppose to digitally.

“Film tends to remind us of our memories, of our childhoods, the way we used to see films. I could never shoot Star Wars on anything but film because it’s a period film. It happened a long time ago!”

He then went on to he wants to film in outer space.

“I asked the question, ‘Is it possible for us to shoot IMAX film in actual space for Star Wars, and I haven’t gotten an answer yet, but they’ve shot IMAX in space!’”

Though this would very clearly require a ton of planning, the Star Wars franchise has been such a resounding success that they might just create a budget for a film of this complexity. The fact that their plan to stick to a once a year schedule on the next two films makes this idea seem a bit less than likely — but who knows. Perhaps The Force is strong with Trevorrow.
