Gangstas Making Astronomical Community Changes, Inc. (GMACC) is having its first annual gala in Long Island tonight [Sunday, March 20] at the Coral House. In addition to holding its first major fundraiser, the organization is honoring individuals they feel have instituted change in their communities and have displayed leadership qualities. People like Moise Verneau (of the YouTube show Money and Violence), Erica Ford (community activist), Nicole P. Bell (activist and widow of Sean Bell), and Jumaane D. Williams (New York City Councilman) are just some of the people who will be honored at the event.

“The fundraiser is about raising money, but also to commemorate the fourth year of GMACC being a 501c3 and honor the people who supported our advocacy,” Chanel Mack, a representative for GMACC, said.

The organization is expecting a good turnout in terms of attendance. Galas and fundraising dinners are where most non-profits raise their money, but GMACC representatives say they are not particularly dependent on it. GMACC has been active in New York since its inception addressing problems that affect its youth— like gang and gun violence. The organization focuses on at-risk youth by breaking, what they call, “the school to prison pipeline.” Through a variety of programs, they are working to help mediate problem situations before they get out of hand, provide physical mentors to kids, and prevent gun and gang violence. The organization also works in the prison system with incarcerated youths to push them to make changes in their lives.

Founder Shanduke McPhatter is a well respected individual, who has a lot of support in the community and throughout the New York Hip Hop community. He has ties to artists like Troy Ave, Brooklyn Zombies, Bamm Vito and other independent artists.

“In reality, Shanduke was the epitome of a gangsta,” Mack says. “He had that mindset and was in the streets. As far as New York politicians, he has good relationships with all of them. He contacted them one by one. They respect him and he respects them.”
