It’s been a while since one artist has been able to achieve such duality with their music, but Manhattan native Mike Milan has been able to do just that. The 24-year-old fuses classic hip-hop elements in his lyrics, and uses his raspy, unconventional voice to sing powerful hooks that separate his music from anything you’ve heard.
Milan, who cites Mos Def and Kanye West as musical influences, began rapping at an early age and found his niche in the battle rapping arena. He soon learned that while he was good at it, it didn’t require too much technique. Milan began to take his lyricism seriously while also listening to alternative bands, like Florence & the Machine to help craft his songwriting abilities.
Milan chopped it up with COSIGN to talk about how he got his start, his first big break that landed him on stage with Ice Cube and why his debut album “Youth” is just what the people need.
You might want to get on this bandwagon now because I promise you, there won’t be much room later…just saying!
