The Sacramento Kings, given their balance of star players and young talent, are considered to be the right coach away from making a serious run at the playoffs. They may have finally found their man: Dave Joerger.

Joerger was let go as coach of the Memphis Grizzlies despite three consecutive playoff berths, but he’s agreed today to become the new head coach of the Kings, who are desperately in need of some immediate coaching upgrades. The last two Kings coaches, Mike Malone and George Karl, struggled to harness the different personalities on the team, most notably George Karl, who was openly, subliminally criticized by his two star players, DeMarcus Cousins and Rajon Rondo.

Despite rampant injuries and the increasingly competitive Western Conference, the Joerger led Memphis to the playoffs in all three of his years as head coach, after taking over for Lionel Hollins in 2013. Without a true superstar, behind the consistent play of Mike Conley and Marc Gasol, the Grizzlies notched important playoff victories as well, including eliminating the Thunder in 2013, and dispatching of the Clippers a year later.

A potent Gay-Cauley Stein-Cousins frontcourt, coupled with Rajon Rondo and the emergence of Seth Curry could make the Kings a viable playoff contender next year. Especially if Joerger continues his coaching prowess.
