This week, Deadline revealed Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith are starring in director Malcolm D. Lee’s latest project, Girl Trip. They are joining previously announced lead Regina Hall.
This particular casting announcement is momentous because it marks the first time Latifah and Pinkett Smith will work together onscreen since F. Gary Gray’s 1996 cult classic, Set it Off. The entertainment moguls recently participated in VH1’s heartwarming Mother’s Day special, Dear Mama.
Jada was honored by Trey, Jaden, Will, and Willow Smith. Queen Latifah honored her mother Rita Bowman and produced the epic evening. Both ladies helm powerful production companies. Pinkett runs Overbrook Entertainment and Latifah runs Flavor Unit Entertainment (recent projects include The Perfect Match, The Art Of Organized Noize and The Wanda Durant Story).
Girl Trip was co-written by Black-ish creator Kenya Barris. It tells the story of four friends who travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival. Will Packer is producing the film, which comes out July 21, 2017 via Universal.
