If there’s anything to be learned from the following, it’s that being very meticulous in selecting the leaders of nations should be a widespread practice, not selective behavior.

Like many other places in the world, the Philippines is doing its best to make sure that it keeps drugs and drug dealers off the street. However, unlike most places in the world, the Philippines’ president-elect, Rodrigo Duterte, is allowing citizens to assist the police in that effort.

In a speech on Sunday night, Duterte pretty much declared it open season on drug dealers, and gave the citizens of his country a unique and potentially dangerous license to make themselves the authority in a precarious situation.

Please feel free to call us, the police, or do it yourself if you have the gun — you have my support,” Duterte said, warning of an extensive illegal drug trade that involves even the country’s police.

If a drug dealer resists arrest or refuses to be brought to a police station and threatens a citizen with a gun or a knife, “you can kill him,” Duterte said. “Shoot him and I’ll give you a medal.”

Yikes. He also made a personal promise to anyone “involved” in drugs or the drug trade. “You son of a whore. I will really kill you.”

This guy makes Donald Trump seem as harmless as Ronald McDonald.
