The 70th Annual Tony Awards will air live from the Beacon Theater in New York City on Sunday, June 12, 2016.
The show will be hosted by Tony Award winner James Corden (probably best known for his late night show and über viral “Carpool Karaoke” segments). Hip Hop musical Hamilton is nominated for a groundbreaking 16 awards. Its cast recording, produced by The Roots, won a Grammy earlier this year.
This year’s Tonys has been praised for its diverse nominees. Hashtags like #TonysSoDiverse and #TonysSoBlack have been floating around in reference and response to the ongoing #OscarsSoWhite fiasco.
Hamilton is poised to win Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. Daveed Diggs, who plays both Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, will likely win Best Actor in a Featured Role. He is competing against his co-stars Christopher Jackson and Jonathan Groff. Renee Elise Goldsberry is a favorite to win Best Actress in a Featured Role. Leslie Odom Jr., who plays Aaron Burr is competing against Hamilton himself, Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Savion Glover is a front-runner to win best choreography for Shuffle Along, which starred Audra McDonald. UK powerhouse Cynthia Erivo will likely snag Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for her work in The Color Purple. The show could also win Best Revival of a Musical. Danai Gurira’s Eclipsed, which stars Lupita Nyong’o, is nominated for Best Play. Nyong’o is also up for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Play.
Be sure to tune in to CBS at 8pm ET on Sunday for entertaining performances and to witness Hamilton make history!
