Tyrel Martin Marhanka, an American man sentenced to prison after being convicted of marijuana charges, promptly killed himself with a separated pair of scissors in a Taiepi, Taiwan court after hearing his fate.

The most bizarre part of this story is the fact that Marhanka had only been sentenced to four years of prison. Sure, four years can be a long time–so much can happen in just one–but in the grand scheme of things, considering there are life sentences being commonly handed out, four years seems like a nominal price to pay for being a key piece of a major drug operation.

Marhanka was arrested last year after authorities found over 200 cannabis plants at a house Marhanka was renting, and he reportedly tried to pass off tending to the weed acreage as a “hobby” of his. The 41-year-old man, who is reportedly survived by a wife and a daughter, allegedly could be heard muttering “four years?” incredulously after the ruling was handed down, and given the chance to appeal by his legal team, declined to contest the sentence.

Witnesses say the convicted man then bellowed “I don’t want to live anymore,” retrieved two sharp metal objects that he’d stashed on his person, and began stabbing himself in the neck, severing crucial arteries. Reports say he was pronounced dead less than an hour after arriving at the hospital.
