Last night, LeBron James won an NBA title.
The mystique of “The Chosen One” finally winning one evaporated years ago when he, alongside Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, disposed of the Oklahoma City Thunder in 5 games in 2012. But it’s long been public knowledge that King James has always eyed bringing a title to Cleveland and Northeast Ohio. An Akron native, James has had ties to that region of Ohio since his inception, and it was no secret that single most salient motivation behind his departure from Miami for a second Cleveland stint was to bring a championship to the place he’s called home for over 30 years, whether he’s always lived there or not.
So, last night, LeBron James did more than just win an NBA title. He ended a 50-plus year major championship drought for the city of Cleveland, and finally delivered the Cavs the NBA title they expected him to deliver when they drafted him with the first pick of the 2003 draft. He quieted a lot of naysayers, muted doubters, and cemented his place among the greats. Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. There aren’t many other names that can be spoken in the same breath. And LeBron knows that. So he reminded everyone of that with this Instagram post.
When you drop a triple-double in Game 7 of the Finals and win your third Finals MVP you’re allowed a few grammatical errors, right?
