Of the four major North American sports leagues, the NBA might be the most liberal when it comes to allowing its players to make political or personal statements. While NFL players have complained about Commissioner Roger Goodell‘s lack of understanding when it comes to supporting things like Breast Cancer Awareness outside of the designated time frames, NBA players saw some of its biggest stars wear “I Can’t Breathe” t-shirts instead of mandated warm-ups in support of finding justice for Eric Garner.

One of those stars was LeBron James, and he commented again today about the recent police killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, two Black men whose lives were taken by the unnecessarily lethal actions of overzealous cops. While retweeting a TIME article, King James revealed that he “shed multiple tears about it all.” Everybody should be outraged by these recent events, but it’s understandable why LeBron would be brought to tears. He has two young sons, and considering the trajectory racial tension in this country is currently on, he’s right to fear the world that will be left for them.

Several other athletes, including Serena Williams and Jabari Parker have also spoken out, and plenty more will likely continue to do so. Whatever platform they have, now would be as appropriate a time as any to use it to help raise awareness about this senseless violence.
