A Toms River man is in custody tonight after a police investigation in the Jersey Shore town escalated early Friday when a suspect pulled a weapon on officers, and the officers opened fire.

Timothy J. Sauers drew a weapon and began to fire at the officers who returned fire and hit the suspect, even though he momentarily escaped by jumping into Toms River. After a land and air search by the NJ State Police Aviation Unit, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department and the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, officers recovered Sauers an hour later and took him to the hospital for treatment.

No officers were injured and it has not yet been revealed what charges Sauers now faces.

This even occurred the same night that snipers opened fire on Dallas police officers, injuring 12, five fatally during a #BlackLivesMatter demonstration protesting the police shooting deaths of Alto Sterling and Philander Castile.
