Several reports have confirmed that five people have been arrested after at least one person shot at police officers in Southeast Washington on Tuesday morning.
A ShotSpotter found the origin gunfire about midnight in the area of Alabama Avenue and 6th Street SE, about a half-mile west of the Congress Heights Metro station.
When officers arrived at the scene, at least one person inside an SUV began shooting at the officers, police said. The officers returned fire and demanded the suspects get out of the vehicle.
Police said the suspects refused police orders to get out of the SUV, but after about 30 minutes, all of the suspects surrendered.
Two men and three women were arrested.
Police say that the officers were not targeted in any way. Investigators believe the suspects were involved in a crime just before the shootout with police. Police have not commented on the nature of that crime.
