Tory Lanez has long ben considered one of the more underrated voices in the Hip Hop and R&B game, and he’s been rather vocal about it in recent months. It isn’t like the rest of the game isn’t hearing his rumblings, either. Drake infamously took a not-so-veiled shot at Lanez on his “Summer Sixteen” single when it was released in January–which Lanez later responded to–and the Ontario native has since taken his career by the horns. He’s got several popular songs in rotation on the internet and the radio, is on the road with A$AP Ferg and Dreezy this summer, and is aggressively preparing fans for the release of his proper debut album.
So, to continue that run, Lanez dropped “August 19th” last night, a searing set of bars, produced by Jahlil Beats, that pulls no punches, especially when it comes to talking about recent events. Lanez discusses the rumors that he passed on/wasn’t considered for the “Freshman cover,” and losing to Bryson Tiller in the “Best New Artist” category at the BET Awards.
