One suspect is in custody while an undetermmined number of suspects are still on the run after a police captain was shot to death coming to assist other officers in a drive-by shooting call.

Dave Melton, 46, a police captain in Kansas City, Kansas with 17 years of service under his belt responded to a callwhere other officers were present following reports of an armed disturbance around 1:30 p.m., police said.

When Capt. Robert Melton came to assist the officers, one of the suspects opened fire, hitting him, police said.

Melton, 46, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Police did not immediately provide information about the suspects, but reportedly, this was not an ambush situation.
