Last week, Amar’e Stoudemire shocked a lot of people with his retirement announcement. It wasn’t necessarily the fact that the 6-time All-Star was leaving the NBA. He’d seen his play decline in each of the last 4 seasons, and hasn’t been the same since his first season in New York in 2010-2011. What shocked people was the fact that Stoudemire chose to retire a New York Knick. Though his first year in New York was one of the best seasons of his career, Stoudemire’s best years were in Phoenix, where he was putting up Hall of Fame caliber numbers year after year. It would later come out that Stoudemire allegedly attempted to retire a Sun, but Phoenix wasn’t very receptive to the idea.

All that aside, Amar’e’s NBA career might be over, but his basketball days will be continuing on. ESPN’s Marc Stein reported today that Stoudemire will announce tomorrow that he’s signed a contract to play basketball overseas, for a team called Hapoel Jerusalem B.C. in Israel. The location isn’t arbitrary, Stoudemire has always identified as Jewish–his mother is Jewish–and has expressed a deep allegiance for “The Holy Land” in the past.

The 33-year-old will begin his Israel Basketball Premier League career this fall.
