There will be no Russell Westbrook sweepstakes in the summer of 2017.

Westbrook, who still has yet to be heard from in an official capacity since Kevin Durant announced his departure for Golden State a month ago today, has agreed to a 3-year, $85 million contract extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the team that drafted him with the 4th pick in the first round of the 2008 NBA Draft.

Westbrook, who was initially thought to be more of a 2-guard talent at the pro level, has developed into a top 3 point guard in the NBA, and has racked up more triple-doubles than any other player in the NBA over the last 3 seasons. Reports swirled in the wake of Durant’s decision that it was Westbrook’s heady play and occasional score-first attitude that ultimately pushed Durant to join the Warriors, but that has been vehemently denied by KD. There were also reports that Westbrook was “angry” and “hurt” that Durant didn’t personally alert him of his decision, those reports have gone unconfirmed by both Durant and Westbrook.

Notably, Westbrook was spotted on a selfie-video taken by a fan cracking up when he was asked about Durant, which led many to believe that the reported tension in fact exists. We’ll be sure to see over the next 2 seasons, when Westbrook and Durant will go head-to-head at least 3 times per season.

As for the Thunder, their post-Durant plan so far is working to perfection. Prior to Durant’s departure, they traded for Victor Oladipo, a sometimes-explosive wing player that will help fill the void KD left, and their rescinding of Dion Waiters‘ qualifying offer gave them the room to offer Westbrook his lucrative deal, which will make Westbrook the third-highest player in the league next year, behind Mike Conley and James Harden, both of whom signed new deals this summer.

In addition, Westbrook staying on at least until the summer of 2018–the third year of his deal is a player option–makes OKC a very attractive destination for future free agents, like Blake Griffin, who is expected to run out of Los Angeles when his contract with the Clippers is up a year from now.
