Dylann Roof, the alleged Charleston church shooter, was assaulted in a jail shower by a fellow inmate yesterday.

The prisoner, Dwayne Marion Stafford, 25, allegedly left his cell and ran to where Roof was showering. He then began assaulting Roof with his hands, according to reports.

Stafford will be charged with third-degree assault and battery, according to the Post and Courier. The charge, a misdemeanor, carries a penalty of up to $500 and 30 days in jail.

Stafford is already in jail on pending charges of first-degree assault and battery and robbery.

Roof, 22, allegedly shot and killed nine people at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church in what authorities said was a hate crime, according to the Charleston Post and Courier. He is also charged in federal court with hate crimes and religious rights violations.

He faces the death penalty. Roof is now being held in solitary confinement at the jail.
