The Arizona Diamondbacks weren’t supposed to be good, per se, this season, but they were expected to show signs of significant progress. Over the last couple of seasons, they’ve built their team around the crown jewel of their offense, the unbelievably good hitter Paul Goldschmidt, and they signed free agent ace Zack Greinke last winter to give themselves a crown jewel in the starting rotation.

Unfortunately, aside from the occasional bright spot–they managed to sweep the defending National League champion Mets, albeit with the Mets hampered by more injuries than possibly any other team in baseball–last week, but didn’t have similar luck against the Red Sox, who are engaged in a heated pennant race with the Orioles and Blue Jays. The worst part? The blowout happened with their prized ace, Greinke, on the mound.

How bad was it? It was 16-1 in the FIFTH inning. For those of you unfamiliar with baseball, if a team averages 5 runs per game, they’re considered a top flight offense. 16 runs is an anomaly, and, for lack of a better term, and eye-popping ass whooping.

While baseball writers across America tweeted their disbelief at Greinke’s demise–the ace lasted less than 2 innings, easily the worst start of his stellar career–the D’backs did their part to provide some comic relief to their fans and followers in the midst of the thrashing.

For a team whose season has already gone up in flames, this is a pretty safe joke, and a good one.
