This edition of HH 101 teaches how to save bread without sacrificing your health

A healthy diet regardless of socio-economic status is achievable. I don’t care if you get food stamps or if you set aside a monthly food allowance, you can still purchase organic fruits, vegetables, meats, vegan foods, and gluten free foods on a budget. The trick is being smart and disciplined about your purchases. I have listed some of the tricks that I use to make my healthy meals for my family of four.

Get Coupons
• Check the website of the maker of your favorite products

Many times coupons are listed on the site. If you cannot find any on the site or in your local paper, call the company and inquire about where you can find coupons for their products. I have found that many times for the inconvenience alone, they will send you coupons via mail or email.

Start Small
• Buying everything organic can be expensive. Focus on purchasing organic versions of the foods that have the highest pesticide content.
These foods are: Apples, Celery, Cherry Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Grapes, Hot Peppers, Nectarines, Peaches, Potatoes, Spinach, Strawberries, Sweet Bell Peppers, Kale, Collard Greens, and Summer Squash

Generic Brands Save
• Buy generic when you can. More often than not the ingredients are the same as the popular name brand versions.

What you are really paying for is the name! They do not put any money in your pockets so what is your dedication to putting money in theirs (marinate on that one). Saving money where you can allows you to splurge on those big ticket food items that matter most to you.

Make It! Make It! Make It!

• Processed/Prepackaged Meals always cost more! Make what you can yourself!

This may seem difficult, but a dope recipe book, good blender and a food processor is all that you need. I make my own peanut and almond butter among other things. I save over $10.00 alone monthly on almond butter, so just imagine all the savings with other products per month.

Buy In Season
• Foods that are in season cost less!
Take advantage of seasonal foods. There are websites (http://bit.ly/1arQoGU) that give you listings of seasonal fruits and vegetables. If your focus is on seasonal but local foods, there are lists available that show seasonal foods by state (http://bit.ly/1arQjmK).

The key to lasting change is starting small and being persistent. Nothing happens overnight, so having patience is important. Change no matter how big or small is still change. Bit by bit be committed to changing your life through your diet. The worst thing that could happen is that you will get healthier, be happier, and teach others to make healthier choices. This is your time to decide to become your own inspiration!
