Sh*t just got real with the makers of popular mobile game Candy Crush Saga, they game makers have received news from the United States Patent and Trademark Office. After waiting a year to get the info King.com, was approved and no have the trademark rights to candy.
What does this mean for games out there with the name candy in it? App developers who have games or apps on the market will be receiving letters from Apple (assuming Google will follow next) asking all developers to remove their apps and games from the App Store. When a patented is filed and approved Apple automatically sends out emails asking those with familiar apps, names and titles to remove them from the app store. These emails don’t really mean Apple is following the orders or siding with King.com but more following patent protocol.
The trademark and patent for the name candy includes games, software, educational services and even clothing.
In the app and mobile gaming world the patent isn’t going over so well with others because the word candy is an everyday and common word. Some have cited they do not have the financial means to go against King.com. Some developers will just simply change the title of their games and apps.
