If ever there was a time to shake your head, now’s that time.

The editors of Girls’ Life magazine are under fire after a mother of five living in Israel called attention to the differences between a Girls’ Life cover and a Boys’ Life cover. The photo, reportedly snapped by a father at a local library, has gone viral to the point that actresses Amy Schumer and Blake Lively commented.

Shoshanna Keats-Jaskoll wrote in her open letter to Girls’ Life, “Your cover has a lovely young lady with a full face of makeup and you invite your readers to ‘steal her secrets. The Boys’ Life cover has in bold letters EXPLORE YOUR FUTURE surrounded by all kinds of awesome gear for different professions — doctor, explorer, pilot, chemist, engineer, etc. subheading — HERE’S HOW TO BE WHAT YOU WANT TO BE,” adding ““Could there be two more divergent messages?” 

We would ask the same. You’ll notice there’s no handsome, Photoshopped guy glaring at the camera on the cover of Boys’ Life. Amy Schumer posted the photo with the simple comment “No,” and Blake Lively has since reposted it, writing, “Wow. @amyschumer I second that emotion. Ladies, let’s not let this happen anymore…”

Publisher and founding editor of Girls’ Life, Karen Bokram, sees nothing wrong with the magazine and said of the comparison in a Sept. 2 interview with Refinery29, “Are we more than lip gloss and clothes? Of course,” she said. “It’s OK to like lip gloss or be interested in fashion… I don’t know how [the problem] became either you like lip gloss and clothes or you like being an astronaut.”

Well, that’s exactly the point, isn’t it? Women are beauty, brainy, accomplished, and complex – so, why only focus on the beautiful part?
