I remember Mahmoud Abdul Rauf. I actually met him in 1990 when he was still Chris Jackson. This was during his rookie season, shortly after he was drafted into the NBA. A friend and I were brought in a handful of times to scrimmage with the Denver Nuggets, due to several injuries that left the team in need of bodies to tune up for the upcoming season.

I was left with the enviable task of guarding Chris and while I lacked any pedigree I had the necessary bravado to not play my position and at least make him garner a sweat. He was listed at 6’1” though I guessed shorter and very slight. His quickness, crossover and lightning release were a rude reminder as to why the offensive savant was the 3rd pick in that year’s draft after a stellar career at LSU. READ MORE
