Twenty-four-year-old De’Launa Powell was shot and killed early Tuesday morning in Alabama.

According to Mobile Police Chief James Barber, Powell was gunned down while sitting inside her car at a stop sign in Mobile, Alabama. Chief Barber believes that someone tried to rob Powell after detectives found multiple shell casings on the scene, FOX 10 reports:

The victim attempted to drive away during the robbery attempt, and that is when someone started shooting at her, police said. Even though she was hit multiple times, she kept driving before stopping on the interstate, police said.

“This young lady got up today, took a shower, got in her vehicle to go to work,” Chief Barber said. “This is actually an attack on us as a community as a society. This could have been anybody’s wife, anybody’s daughter.”

Powell’s friend, Jessica Silver, said, “I’m just shocked, I don’t understand. She didn’t deserve this at all.” Powell was known as a mother, a makeup artist, and dear friend. She leaves behind a 5-year-old daughter.

De’Launa Powell’s death marks the ninth homicide in the city in almost two weeks.
