Actress Kellee Stewart’s latest role is one she’s very familiar with—only this time, the exact words are written in the script: “Black Best Friend.”
From the minds of the actress and writer-executive producer Sebastian Jones and executive producer Cedric the Entertainer, BBF is a Fox comedy inspired by Stewart’s history in acting, reports Deadline. Stewart, who has been in a range of works in television and film like Guess Who, notably played Stephanie Layne in TBS’s My Boys, the best friend of protagonist PJ Franklin (Jordana Spiro).
In BBF, her role is front and center…even though in the social situation her character lives in, she is not. Instead of focusing on her white friends as leads, cameras will be on her breaking away from the stereotype of the token black friend.
So far, BBF has a script commitment with 20th Century Fox TV. Stay tuned for more details.
