Super Bowl commercials are already winning and its only Thursday.
Remember the Cheerios commercial where the little girl checks in with her mom on the validity of the cereal being good for hearts before leaving her dad to wake up covered in the little o’s? Well, where some people might not have given the ad all of their attention, others were making racist comments, or pointing the racist finger at the commercial itself.
In the opening scene of the original commercial, young Gracie (an obviously mixed child) asks her white mom a question and the 30 second clip ends with her black father waking up from a nap. The company received both praise and backlash for their bold move and seemed to have been inspired by both sides because the family returns this year just in time for the Super Bowl this weekend with big news. They’re expanding the family!
“Cheerios is about families and love and connections and breakfast,” Camille Gibson, Vice President of marketing for Big G cereals, said on the General Mills corporate blog. ”Our new Cheerios ad celebrates one of those special moments in a family that America fell in love with. The ad quietly celebrates the emotional sharing and simple joys we find when spending just a few simple moments together every day.”
Agree with Cheerios and their bold move? I personally think its beautiful because not many companies have showcased a mixed family, not just in advertisement but in one that will be displayed on a huge platform like the Super Bowl.
