If HBO’s Insecure was the breakout hit of the fall, then actress Yvonne Orji is definitely the breakout star.
The actress who plays Molly on Issa Rae‘s hit series became a fan favorite seemingly overnight thanks to her character’s super relatable dating life. But Molly is nothing like Orji in real life – because she’s never had sex before.
The 32-year-old virgin opened up about what it’s like to do those steamy sex scenes when she’s never done it in real life. She told Vulture, “I see Molly’s sex scenes more as comic relief. This week with Jidenna was more of a light make-out session, but I actually haven’t watched the later episodes where Molly gets it in. But I know that Molly is not Yvonne, so I had to figure out how to marry the two. How do I be true to this character but at the same time protect my brand? We found a middle ground where you’ll see I have my clothes on for the most part.”
She continued on, “Debbie Allen directed next week’s episode and we talked about what wouldn’t be shown. I would never do something I’m uncomfortable with. It’s funny — because I haven’t had sex before, there were technical things they thought they had to teach me. But as a woman, you’re in tune with your sexuality. And I’ve seen movies! I’m not a prude. I didn’t grow up in an Amish land with no TVs. So I was like, ‘Hey, I’m familiar with how this works. I’m just not engaging in it.’ It was just a matter of making it realistic.”
As for how her real life as Yvonne differs from Molly, she told reporters, “I’m a single gal in L.A., so I know that story very well. It’s kind of like we walk this parallel. But it’s no secret that I’m a virgin and I’m waiting till I get married, where Molly is very free sexually and it’s just like, ‘Hm, this is going to be very interesting to tap into this part of her.’ I don’t curse in my real life but, like, Molly curses every chance she gets. There are so many things about her that are very similar to me and there’s so many things about her that feel like, ‘I don’t believe in these things.’ I really had to dig deep and find the funny and nuanced and really bring her to life. Because even though she may not be me in that regard, I have friends like her. And I’ve seen her and I could have been her. I’m living on the edge a little bit as Molly. It’s fun.”
Insecure has been picked up for a second season, so luckily that means more sex scenes and more Molly.
